This week was a little different. For one, we didn't get up and go on tours before class this week. Mainly because (1) we are getting low on sleep (2) we have "hit the high points" and for the most part seen what we really want to see here in Vienna (3) class is getting more time consuming (4) museums are getting REALLY old and (5) the accident
Wednesday:
Melissa, John, Scott, and I meet up before class to buy Scott some more shirts. Scott only brought 4 shirts to Europe AND does not know how to use the washing machine at his host home. Typical male. Melissa and I had missed our bus, so we got there late and put the whole morning in a time crunch from the get go. To make a long story long, we shopped for a while and split. Melissa and Scott stay to pay for the shirts and run to class (M & S are in the same class that starts earlier than the classes John and I are in). John and I head to the grocery store to get lunch (sandwiches for 1.20 euro = win). Well 30 minutes later, when we get to the institute, Melissa has her leg kicked up. Turns out, in a rush to get to class, Melissa AND Scott both fell on the escalator. Scott caught himself, but Melissa did not (WARNING: never run on an escalator with both hands full. And if you start to fall drop your stuff and just catch yourself.) Melissa busted her knee pretty bad. We all debated over whether she needed stitches, but after examining the wound 2 hours later it was pretty clear she did. So Melissa "had" to miss the tour of the undertaker museum to go get stitches. Meanwhile (but after class), I got to go with the Lazenby's to pick up Mama and Daddy from the Vienna airport. They made it! I got to enjoy a relaxing afternoon and evening catching up with everyone.
Thursday:
Due to Melissa's exciting day, we voted for a slow morning. I met up with Mama and Daddy to give them a VERY brief orientation to the center of town. I showed them the Institute and a few places nearby and got them on a bus tour. After class, we went on a tour of Haus der Musik. I would have really enjoyed this museum during our first two weeks here; however, my patience with museums is waning and I basically just goofed off with friends. We toured the floor that dealt with famous classical composers, but what we weren't told was how awesome the floor below was. John and I made our very own CD. And it sounded horrible but we had a blast making it. I'm disappointed that this was our ONLY contact with any type of music with the culture class. Hello, Vienna is VERY famous for music. After like 16 straight days of hearing about history with a little bit of art thrown in, music was a nice welcome. We wanted to go to the aquarium since it stays open late on Thursday, but thanks to a monsoon that caused us to camp out in a cafe for 45 minutes (and Melissa's bum leg) it just got too late to do anything. We actually got all the way to the aquarium, but since it cost 10.20 and we only had an hour till close, we just went to a restaurant to order desert and chat for a bit.
Friday:
First, a few of us went with Melissa to the hospital where they redressed and inspected her knee. Austria has socialized medicine, and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly she was seen. Afterwards, we got lunch, shopped a bit, and headed to the aquarium (for real this time). We REALLY wanted to go to the famous zoo, but the rain limited us to indoor activities. The aquarium was surprisingly fun. We just goofed off a lot. After dinner at an Italian restaurant, we headed to see the Four Seasons by Vivaldi. It's not every day you see a violin concerto in Vienna. Mama and Daddy joined us for the concert. It was a great way to end the week.
Cross your fingers the rain holds off tomorrow. The ONE weekend I really don't want it to rain, the forecast predicts 90% chance of rain. Typical.
