every bedside needs a table

So I've had the same nightstand since I was about 13.
I realized it was time for an upgrade.
Instead of buying a new piece of furniture, I took out the handy dandy paintbrush and bought a few baskets from Target.

Before

After
The hardest part was waiting for the paint to dry.

Solstice

The physical science of night and day has always fascinated me.  You know, how days and night get shorter and longer at different times of the year and the necessity of the leap year every 4 years.  Add our man-made daylight savings and you've got a delicate, carefully calculated system of night and day that almost perfectly fits the lifestyle of... well... life.

And I say almost perfectly for one reason: we always want more time in one day.  And summer solstice (TODAY!)  is the longest day of the year.  (Even though people wanting longer days typically don't want more daylight.  Not the point, though.)

So enjoy the longest day of the year.  And... Happy Summer!

Vacation Orlando

So it's pretty safe to say this post is a tad tardy.  Biology has totally inundated my life, so blogging hasn't exactly been priority numero uno.

Anyway, here are some highlights.  I wasn't really that great about taking pictures, so I'm not sure how representative they are of our time distribution throughout the parks.  My apologies.

Some animals at Animal Kingdom:

Epcot:

This car would be nice...

Hogwarts:

Classic:

Seaworld:

Scary sharks!

Feeding the dolphins:

With the cast of Indiana Jones (that guy is REALLY tall):

This picture is probably the most accurate representation of the week: lots of walking.

The Magical Craft Box

Late last week, my toilet broke.

Not in a plumbing-issue kind of way, just a plastic piece in the toilet broke... and that made the handle (as in the one used for flushing) fall off.

Anyway, despite my good intentions to go to Home Depot over the weekend, our toilet remained broken.

But... last night I remembered the craft box.  This is the box that Alex and I keep all of our craft supplies in (shocker...) at the dorm, and it's at my house for the summer.

Hey Alex, I hope it's okay that I borrowed some of your yarn.

But the good news is the toilet is "fixed."

Some beach

Well I just returned from a mini-vacay in Panama City. I am proud to say that I am not completely sunburned. score. Highlights from the trip:
crab hunting friday night (well i taught my sister the cupid shuffle while everyone else was crab hunting)
eating at one of my all-time favorite restaurants saturday night (Boar's Head. Don't let the name fool you.)
soaking up the sunshine and playing in the water. pretty sure i could do that all summer long.
On another note, Mom, Dad, and Isabelle caught a lot of fish. They let most of them go except for...
Kevin named him Flipper because apparently this poor fish was aspiring to be a dolphin. Didn't know Mr. Fly could communicate with sea creatures...
Oh, how i'll miss the beach.

Orlando: Getting There

"It's not the destination, it's the journey."

Except when it's not.

Good news everyone, Birmingham International Airport has your back:

I checked and didn't see any of those guys on my plane.  Maybe next time?

But when you're going to Disney, the airplane ride IS NOT what it's all about (::insert Hokey Pokey reference::).  But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy shopping in SkyMall.  Or making fun of SkyMall.

Cue highlight reel:

Scene 1:

"Clearly a better Cutting Board!"  Get it?  Cause it's clear?  Wowzers.

Scene 2:

What's 6 ft tall and only weighs 92 lbs?  Yep that's right, it's your Easter Island Statue.  After one low payment of $995, you can have this beaut delivered curbside.  Good thing cause I'm not sure Southwest would like me checking this baby...  Andd it's not even real stone.  Lame.  {Does the price include the boy photoshopped in?}

Scene 3:

Laziness at an all time high: you don't have to hold up your laptop OR yourself.

Last but definitely not least...

Scene 4:

Time is of the elements.  I just can't get over this.  I can't decide if I should be embarrassed that I think this is absolutely hilarious.

So in case you can't tell, the journey wasn't so bad.

I Am Alive

So. this is awkward.
But I have returned from hiding. Really though, I now have INTERNET!!!
It know I should have some really exciting news, but I haven't gone on any adventures like Disney World. i'm a tad jealous.
However, I did get to the Zac Brown Band concert this past weekend which was awe-to-the-some.

Kevin and his sister, Megan. She is great and so is her blog. Check it.

side note: Summer school is the worst thing ever invented. EVER.
